Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace. These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice. These two men are laying down their lives in mankinds most noble goal: - the search for truth and understanding.. These were the words that William Safire, Richard Nixon’s speechwriter had prepared for the 37th President of the United States, to be delivered in the event that Apollo 11 - codename for NASAs manned mission to Moon - met with a catastrophic failure. You see, Nixons advisers were not entirely sure about the missions odds of success. But it seemed that the young brilliant minds at NASA were more prudent than Nixons advisers gave them credit, for they were not at all prepared to leave the lives of 3 brave men, billions of dollars, and decades of dedicated Research & hardwork, and more so - the hopes of entire mankind, to something as trivial as chance/luck. And as fate would have it, it were Neil Armstrongs words of hope rather than Safires poetic homage, that would be remembered as one of the greatest triumphs of Mankind. A group of British scientists interviewed as part of the 40th anniversary events of 2009, reflected on the significance of the Moon landing, thusly - It was carried out in a technically brilliant way with risks taken ... that would be inconceivable in the risk-averse world of today ... The Apollo programme is arguably the greatest technical achievement of mankind to date ... nothing since Apollo has come close to the excitement that was generated by those astronauts - Armstrong, Aldrin and the 10 others who followed them... Neil Armstrong, Edwin Buzz Aldrin & Michael Collins have long been celebrated as Heroes of not just a Nation, but that of entire mankind, but this post and the following quote is dedicated to the indomitable ingenuity and audacity of preciseness of the brilliant engineers, technicians and scientists at NASA who toiled laboriously behind the scenes to give humanity its greatest achievement till date. “Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready..” ~The Old Man and the Sea `Rahul Sharma #Apollo45
