Father Emmanuel of Duke Centre for Reconciliation at Duke University has written a wonderful piece on theological journey of healing through lamentation. In this piece he observes 7 key movements as seen in the books of Psalms, Job, Jeremiah, Joel and Lamentations. that critical in the healing process as we deal with the history and the cycle of conflict in our contexts. These seven steps or movements are: 1) Honestly naming the situation=WHAT IS HAPPENING? 2) Declaring to God the feeling of being forsaken =HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THIS? 3) Anger and revolt=HOW REALLY ARE YOU FEELING? 4) Remembrance of God’s work =WHERE IS GOD IN ALL THIS? 5) Silence and hope= SILENCE/SELAH/PAUSE AND PONDER 6) Recognition and confession of sins=WHAT IS YOUR PART IN THIS?/ARE YOU JUSTIFIED TO BE ANGRY? 7) Confidence in the restoration by God =GOD IS AT WORK AND HAS INDEED BEEN AT WORK Unfortunately many of us, in dealing with conflict situations, normally branch off at step 3 and seek alternative methods of dealing with the situation. Some of us never even start on this journey. We pretend all is well when inside we are burning and seething with rage. This sometimes translates into health problems of depression, high blood pressure and other forms of pain that impair of sense of judgment and rob us of the victory that could be ours in Jesus name.
