Father, daughter to participate together in R-Day parade #garhwalRifles #Uttarakhand #proud It will be a double joy for subedar (retd.) Meharban Singh Bhandari when he marches down the Rajpath on January 26 in the veterans contingent of the parade. Ahead of him will be his daughter, Captain Neelam Bhandari of 54 Engineering Regiment, who will part of the firstever women contingent of the Indian Army in the Republic Day parade. The father and daughter have been practicing hard for the grand day braving the winter chill along with scores of others who are determined to put up their best show. A soldier from 5 Garhwal Rifle, Meharban retired in 2009 after 30 years of combat service. His daughter Neelam joined the army a year later in the Engineering Division. It is one of the rare occasions when the father and the daughter will be part of the parade. This is the first time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ensured that women officers of Army, Indian Air Force and the Navy take part in separate contingents sending a strong signals about the their significance in the armed forces despite being short in numbers.
