**Father of Indian Economics** How many Indians Know Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar was the 1st Indian who graduated DSc in Economics ( at London School of Economics, England) ...??? How many Indians Know he was the 1st Ph.D in Economics & 1st double doctorate in Economics in South Asia...??? Dr.Babasaheb is the highest educated Indian economist of all times. He did his masters in Economics from Columbia University, U.S., then did his PhD in Economics in Columbia again, way back in 1917. He then went to England, did his Doctor of Science in Economics from London School of Economics in 1920. His P.hd thesis was on the discipline of Indian economic thought, how it evolved. Sadly, till 1991, all the books on the history of Indian economic thought had no mention of Dr.Babasaheb or at best in foot notes. However, Dr.Babasaheb’s P.hd dissertation at Columbia, "Evolution of Provincial Finances in British India" is the main source of reference for all the reports so far by the Finance Commissions. The man who started the provision for a finance commission every 5 years in the Constitution was none other than Dr.Babasaheb. He also created employment exchanges in India as the labour member in Provincial government in British India, so also the tripartite mechanism of settling labour issues through trade unions, labours and the government representatives and introducing skill development initiative in the government sector. As the Labour Member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council between 1942 and 1946, Dr.Babasaheb was instrumental in bringing about several labour reforms, including establishment of employment exchanges, reducing 12 hrs working to 8 hrs. How many Indians know that the original source of reference for all the 13 Finance Commission reports, in a way, are based on Dr.Babasaheb’s P.hd thesis, "The Evolution of Provincial Finance in British India", written in 1923...??? Prof.Amartya Sen, 6th Indian to get Prestigious Nobel Prize has claimed in a lecture session : “Ambedkar is my Father in Economics. He is true celebrated champion of the underprivileged .He deserves more than what he has achieved today. However he was highly controversial figure in his home country, though it was not the reality. His contribution in the field of economics is marvelous and will be remembered forever..!” We know the outcome, but never give credit to the person. Shame on Castiest Mental Indians.
