Father’s Day Today, we honor a very special person in our lives. Fathers carry the name of our God. When Jesus was asked by his disciples how to pray, He said, “When you pray, say, ‘Our Father who art in heaven, holy is your name (authority)’” (Luke 11:2). Earthly fathers are, by God’s design, authority figures in the home, both physically and spiritually. The Bible is replete with such admonitions as “The husband is the head of the wife” (Eph. 5:23), “Listen my son to your father’s instructions” (Prov.1:8), “A good son makes a glad father” (Prov.10:1), and “Fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Eph.6:4). By obedience, father Abraham is called the father of the faithful. By announcement, father Joshua speaks for all fathers, when he said, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh.24:15). By example, father Noah saved his family both physically and spiritually (1 Pet.3:20-21). And Father God is always there to hear us (Jonah 2:1-2), guide us (Psalm 23:3), protect us (Jeremiah 16:19), love us (John 3:16), support us (Psalm 46:1), and believe in us (Hebrews 13:5-6). Godly, earthly fathers share the same characteristics. And for all those men who step up to the plate as godly fathers, we honor you. Happy Father’s Day! Steven K. Guy
