Fatwa against ‘boisterous’ Milad celebrations in city HYDERABAD: While preparations are on in full swing to celebrate Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, on January 4 on grand scale, elders have begun issuing calls for low key celebrations and helping the community instead. According to Anwar Ahmed from the Jamia Nizamia, the Islamic seminary, the institution started circulating its fatwa on various platforms, including the internet and web-based messaging applications. The fatwa discouraged inconveniencing others, irrespective of faith, by playing loud music or obstructing traffic. This is vice-chancellor Mufti Khaleel Ahmeds view. The fatwa prescribes that Milad is a time to engage in religious worship, Ahmed said. Others said that the religious decree is being displayed at the entrances of mosques, among other places, so as to create awareness. Observers reiterated that there was a pressing need to return to the quiet celebrations. They said the trend of celebrating festivals on a grand scale would encourage competitive communalism between communities. We are encouraging people not to use DJs and crowd the streets unnecessarily. Instead, a bodies such as Meher Foundation and others are organizing blood donation camps which they deem are constructive, Saleem Qadri, a resident of Hussaini Alam said. Sources said that while two main processions -- from Mecca Masjid to the Haj House in Nampally - are organized by the Sunni United Forum of India (SUFI) and Markazi Anjuman-e-Qadriya, a body of around 20 other organizations, the trend of youth taking to the streets and disrupting traffic has gained momentum. We are against wearing colours on the face and creating nuisance. We urge bikers not to break traffic rules on Milad-un-Nabi eve. Instead they can take part in blood donation camp on December 28 and help us to collect 1,500 units of blood, SUFI president and former AP State Wakf Board member Syed Zaheeruddin Soofi said. Meanwhile, police have also urged youth to exercise restraint. South Zone DCP V Satyanarayana said that the police has engaged community elders and explained to them that young bikers can disrupt the smooth flow of traffic.
