Favorites from a recent movie marathon (Drama) August: Osage County - A story of family scandals and incestuous love affairs would have been just a glum art-housy flick, if it werent for brilliant performances. Watch it for the intense nonverbal communication between Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep (and hey Benedict Cumberbatch plays a dumb guy!). Philomena - Judi Denchs sensitive portrayal of a devout Christian in search of her son is heart wrenching, Steve Coogans as a cynical journalist is remarkable. Both Dench and Coogan demonstrate complexity and depth, its the nuanced twists and transformations of the characters that makes a Philomena a compelling human story. Nebraska - Alexander Payne was the sole reason I decided to watch Nebrakska, and believe you me - if you were moved by The Descendants, Nebraska elevates that feeling by another notch. An unkempt comedy-drama about a sensitive son, his ailing father and snappy mother narrated in the monochromatic fabric of the American Midwests humdrum. Nebraksa isnt just the setting of the film, its a character in itself.
