[Favourite Albums of 2014] Good Area - Cubic Zirconia b/w Bad - TopicsExpress

[Favourite Albums of 2014] Good Area - Cubic Zirconia b/w Bad Karlshafen (7, Kye Records) Probably the grooviest slab of DIY home recorded antics this year! Truly damaged transmissions from one bedroom to another. Good Area appeared in 2013 with their debut French Antarctica, an LP that clearly demonstrates their singularly private vision, an assemblage of sounds that is unapologetically and effortlessly anti-genre. Cubic Zirconia continues that path, with the duos use of guitar and cornet spurts, tape loops plus the zeeerk rewind/forward sound - all drenched in room-tone reverb, trailing through the endless droll of a drum machine. I find it hard to pin point the lineage for such music. Definitely The Shadow Ring. Some Derek Bailey? Music Concrete applied with punk abandon? Prog? Probably some of everything is thrown into the mix and percolated into their sound (so hard to describe) which threads its own tangent. The surprising thing about Good Area is that they should be alienating, but turns out to be immediately enjoyable and addictive, which is quite something for such outsider music. Also check out their tape Pronunciation (out on Hanson Records). Cant wait for their next full length album!
