Favourite-songs-of-2014 #1 - Casualties of Cool - Flight And the hands-down winner for the year is also the most chilled… Casualties of Cool is the wonderful alt-country side project from the uber-talented Devin Townsend, with Che Dorval on vocals, funded from a Pledge Music campaign and released independently. Flight is the stand-out track from their great debut album. And as any fan of Devin will know, this is a whole world away from his grind core noise terror for which he is perhaps better known (Strapping Young Lad being one such vehicle for that genre). Had it not been for one of the all-nighters pulled at work somewhere during the middle of the year I probably wouldnt have latched onto this one. A quick 5 minute scan on my favourite rock news website provided a link to this wonderful, haunting video, and a blissed-out track of ethereal vocals, clean arpeggio guitar chords hitting plenty of sus-4s, backed by melting e-bows and effective ambient sound design.
