Favourite-songs-of-2014 #5 - Rival Sons - Play the Fool Oooh now - how far does one go until one gets a knock on the door from Messers Page, Plant and Paul-Jones ?? Actually to be fair this is no less a rip-off of Misty Mountain Hop than a number of Zeppelin tracks are of unknown numbers from a few of their more remote contemporaries and early 30s blues singers... Herein lies a cracking riff, swinging groove, great lead vocal, fine rhythmic change in the breakdown, all encased in a warm fuzz reminiscent of 1971. Had Rival Sons shot onto the scene 20 years ago when people were buying albums and financially fueling a buoyant record industry, they would have made it huge. Picking up the baton in the dying days of grunge and running head-long into early 70s hard rock would have been a much more interesting distraction than the numbing thud and whine of Britpop.
