Fayetteville friends-- I am participating in a hunger strike in support of Syrians under siege during the Geneva peace talks. My friend and yoga teacher Hamsa Kurth Newmark asked me to participate in a relay fast to show support from Fayetteville, Arkansas. I am taking over for her after she has fasted for four days. A classmate will take on the fast on Thursday, but in between I NEED YOUR HELP. I have to end my fast Wednesday morning because I have to attend a woodshop training session for my painting class, and I also have an interview that afternoon. If you can fast for one day, please let me know. If more than one person would like to be involved, you can help me shorten my fast to a day or two. For more information: stopthesiege.wordpress/international-hunger-strike/ The war in Syria has been going on so long, and I feel badly for not doing something supportive sooner, but something now is better than nothing ever. I have to say that one of the main reasons I wanted to do this is to grasp just a little better how people are suffering. I read and listen to the news, I look at photographs of the destruction, and I try to imagine what it is like to live amidst war, but I cant come close to understanding what thats like. I guess I feel like experiencing hunger at least gives me something concrete; that is one part of what Syrians under siege experience. While Im fasting, I am reminded constantly of the reason. To think about the tragedy of this war and the ruthlessness of the Assad regime throughout my day at least makes it all a little more real to me.
