Fear of ALLAH ~~~~~~~~~~ The Arabic word for fear of ALLAH is taqwa. It comes from the root word meaning to guard against something or to prevent. Indeed, a person exhibits fear of ALLAH by seeking to prevent ALLAHs punishment by carrying out what HE has commanded him or her to do and abstaining from what HE has prohibited. Almighty ALLAH calls upon all people in every era to fear HIM. ALLAH says in The Holy Quran: Verily we have directed the People of the Book before you, and you (O Muslims) to fear Allah. [Al-Quran Surah An-Nisā (The Women)....4:131] O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared and die not except in a state of Islam. [Al-Quran Surah Āli `Imrān (Family of Imran)....3:102] The fear of ALLAH is the path to forgiveness, salvation, and the attainment of ALLAHs mercy. This meaning is crystal clear in many verses. ALLAH says: Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good. [Al-Quran Surah An-Naĥl (The Bee)....16:128] My mercy extends to all things. That (mercy) I shall ordain for those who do right (mutaqqun). [Al-Quran Surah Al-A`rāf (The Heights)....7:156] For those who fear Allah, He will make their path easy. [Al-Quran Surah Aţ-Ţalāq (The Divorce)....65:5] ...and He is with you wherever you are. [Al-Quran Surah Al-Ĥadīd (The Iron)....57:4] Abu Dhar Al-Ghifari and Mu`adh ibn Jabal related that Prophet Muhammad (SâllAllâhu ‘Alâihi Wâsâllâm) said, Fear ALLAH wherever you are. Follow up a bad deed with a good deed and it will blot it out. And deal with people in a good manner. [At-Tirmidhi] This hadith is a significantly important one as it deals with a number of rights a Muslim should always pay attention to. Ibn Rajab says, This is a powerful advice, bringing together the rights of ALLAH and the rights of HIS servants.
