Feast of Trumpets - Devotional by Raul Ries ‘And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work. For you it is a day of blowing the trumpets. You shall offer a burnt offering as a sweet aroma to the Lord: one young bull, one ram, and seven lambs in their first year, without blemish.’ Numbers 29:1-2 The Feast of Trumpets is the beginning of the High Holy Days. It is also the beginning of the New Year on the Jewish calendar. At sundown, the shofar, or ram’s horn, will be blown to call the people to repent, as they prepare for the High Holy Days and Yom Kippur. This is not a New Year’s celebration as we know it. This is a very serious and solemn time for the Jews. During Rosh Hashanah and the Ten Days of Repentance, the people will repent before the Lord and do good deeds in order to get their names in the Book of Life for one more year. Remember, the Jewish people are still under the Law. They can no longer make the traditional sacrifices to the Lord, so they have to try and make atonement for their sins. They have to do enough good deeds to outweigh the bad ones they did throughout the year. With such a huge burden to achieve forgiveness, I can see why this is such a serious day for the Jewish people. When I look at my life, I pray my good deeds outweigh my bad ones, because I want to be a good witness of Jesus Christ. I know I cannot earn my way into heaven — there is no way, but I want to represent the Lord the best I can. As Christians, we should all examine our lives to see if we represent Christ well. A Christian’s life should be nothing but a visible representation of Christ. -Thomas Brooks-
