Feather prep - 8 weeks before a show. This video really only shows feather prep. In addition to what is shown here, we trim & condition nails & beak, and throw them in a show cage to determine conformation. I also keep a close eye on droppings (notice the white paper in the bottom of the show cages in this video series). It helps me determine the stress factor for each bird. Birds who stress too much in the cage will not be shown - droppings can often indicate that stress factor. When Im choosing birds to show, I take each one in hand and check them from head to toe. I want to make sure that not only is the bird in good overall condition, but good overall health, too. This is why Ive been showing how I blow the feathers from the belly. I want to see nice, deep pink skin, concave belly with no funky colors or enlarged organs, no large fat deposits. I will not take a bird to show that could potentially spread illness to the other show birds. I know there are some breeders who arent as careful, so when these birds come home from the show, theyll be placed in quarantine away from my other birds until I am satisfied they havent brought any illnesses home.
