Featured Horse Breed: Bashkir Curly • Origin is unknown. There have been many theories; however, all have been discredited upon further investigation. • Blood typing has shown that many breeds have been used to develop the curly; particularly the Quarter Horse and the Morgan. • They date back to 1898 when Peter Damele and his father spotted three Bashkir Curlies in the remote high country of Central Nevada. Peter bred the Curlies for ranch work and many of the U.S. Curlies can be traced back to the Damele herd. • The American Bashkir Curly registry was established in 1971. The founders realized that many of these horses were ending up in slaughter and wanted to do something to protect the breed from extinction. • They typically shed their mane, and sometimes even their tail hair, in the summer and regrow it in the winter. • Their ringlet curls are distinctive to their winter coat; in the summer they shed out to a wave or even longer straight hair. • The curly hair coat is only passed to about 50% of their offspring • Extremely hardy winter horses • Many coat colors including Appaloosa and Pinto • Hypoallergenic hair coat • Medium sized horse resembling early Morgans • Used for a wide variety of equestrian activities including: games, western riding, English riding, endurance, and driving.
