More About PhillyCAM PhillyCAM’s mission is to be a community media center that brings together the people of Philadelphia to make and share media that promotes creative expression, democratic values and civic participation. As the non-profit membership organization designated by the City of Philadelphia to operate its public access television station, PhillyCAM assists individuals and organizations to communicate with each other through the creation and distribution of non-commercial media by providing access to media-making tools, training and opportunities for interaction between diverse communities. PhillyCAM offers video production training, community meeting space, access to High Definition TV studios and equipment, media production project support for non-profits, youth programs, producer networking events and cable television timeslots. The programs provide opportunities for everyone, regardless of age, background or experience, to use media to amplify issues that matter to them most. PhillyCAM functions much like a public library - a community resource that ensures that all people have equal access to vital tools of creation and communication. In only five years since going on the air, PhillyCAM’s on air schedule has grown to feature over 60 weekly programs. On average 20 hours of new content is aired on the station weekly. PhillyCAM members create content on local issues from the point of view of poor and working people, students’ responses to the education crisis, and unique perspectives on arts and culture and social issues by independent filmmakers. PhillyCAM also airs independently produced videos by local filmmakers on dance, music, theater, fashion, environmental and women’s issues, visual and literary arts. PhillyCAM Executive Director, Gretjen Clausing commented, “The phenomenal growth of our creative community and program offerings is testament to what the activists who fought those many years to bring public access to the city knew. Philadelphians are hungry for communication vehicles that enable them to share their voices. PhillyCAM in our short time on the scene has created a new space for cultural expression on local television” For more information about PhillyCAM visit phillycam.org.
