Feb 8th plein air opportunity in Vernon hills: This is your notice of our upcoming Lake County Art League Plein Air Group session in the pavilion addition to the Cuneo Mansion and Gardens in Vernon Hills, Illinois. The mansion was donated to Loyola University Chicago in 2009, and they built the 5,500 square foot addition in 2011 to serve as a permanent location for weddings, corporate functions, meetings and other events. Our group held a late July plein air session in the mansion gardens, and at that time saw the potential for painting the snowy landscape from the warmth of this new space. It has large widows on three sides that overlook the wooded grounds of the estate. Artists can set up in the glassed-in foyer, or in pavilion rooms A or C. Room A has the least obstructed view. Please note that artists must work over drop cloths if they are painting or if they are drawing with ink. We are also invited to draw and photograph (but not paint) in the glassed-in music room that overlooks the front lawns, and in the colonnaded Roman atrium that dramatically centers the mansion. Artists will be asked to leave these historic spaces at 11:30 if visitors arrive for a tour. ----Activity: Painting, drawing and photography. ----Location: Loyola University Chicago’s Cuneo Mansion and Gardens in Vernon Hills, Illinois. ----Date and time: Saturday February 8 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. ----Skill: Any level of expertise is welcome, as is any artistic medium. ----Directions. The main entrance the Cuneo Mansion and Gardens is on the west side of Milwaukee Ave. (SH 21), exactly 0.5 miles north of Town Line Rd. (SH 60). This is a formal stone gate with a guard building and a small sign that says “Cuneo Mansion and Gardens.” Pick up the phone on the face of the guard building, and when someone answers sat that you are here for the “Lake County Art League event.” The gate will be remotely opened for you to enter. ----GPS: 1350 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills, Illinois, 60061. Make you take the entrance described above, as the road farther north at a traffic light is an exit from the estate. ----Parking: Follow the entrance drive for 0.3 miles and park in the small circular drive at the front mansion entrance. (Last summer we parked in a gravel lot, but this year’s strange winter weather has turned that into a mass of ice.) Park along the entrance drive if there is no room left in the circular drive. ----Enter the mansion at the brass double door, which puts you into the atrium where we will initially meet at 9:00 and will meet again to share our work at 11:45. The music room is hidden to your left after you enter from the drive. The pavilion addition is to your right down a corridor and a few steps. ----Exit. To exit the estate, continue a short distance on the entrance drive past the front door loop and go to the RIGHT even though a very nice sign with a number of destinations says “Exit” and points to your left. Going to the right will take you past a few traffic cones that block entry to an inner drive, and then to a big, improvised sign that says “Exit” in red block letters and this time points to the right. That road leads to the lighted intersection on Milwaukee Ave .----Caution: The host, organizers and sponsors that make this session possible cannot guarantee your safety or be responsible for personal injury or property damage resulting from your actions. Have fun, but be careful. ----Guests are welcome, but must be aware of the above caution. No children please, as we will be far too absorbed in our art to monitor their activity. ----Questions should be directed to Chris Tanner at 847-367-5308 (cell) or the above e-mail address. ----Pending: Our next plein air session will be March 15 in downtown Richmond. Richmond is a regional center for agriculture, and this event should provide opportunities to create an entry to Lake County Heritage Farm Foundation juried show (June 1 submittal deadline). Loyola University is generously hosting this event. Their historic specialist Lisa Cushing Davis will be there during the plein air session, and thank her personally if you have the chance. Please feel free to forward this information to anyone you think might be interested in our plein air activities. The Lake County Art League Plein Air Group has met every few Saturday mornings at interesting places, pretty much year-round, since 2006. Membership in the art league is not necessary. This is just an e-mail list of about 165 people who show up when they can to work on their craft, with 3-30 people attending any one session. No instruction is provided, and there are no dues, no officers, no meetings and no RSVP obligations. We do ask for ideas on where to paint, draw and photograph, or how to challenge ourselves as artists. Whenever possible sessions conclude with a group sharing where artists identify a success and a frustration of the morning. We seek to encourage anyone with an interest in art to take this opportunity to work with talented people and to experience the expressive release of creating art quickly. -------------------------------------------------------
