February 13, featuring the most popular man in history: Jesus Christ. While Christianity remains the largest religion in both America and the world, the life and legacy of the man whose teachings act as its foundation have long been overshadowed by theocracy and overpoliticization. A new film, Son of God, which opens nationwide February 28, seeks to change that. By placing Christ’s life and death in a historical context while also offering a modern take on the Gospel narratives, the Jesus presented by Son of God is a man you want to know; a teacher you want to follow. “He’s this incredible person, who speaks right to you, and then you see that happens to Him,” says Mark Burnett in an interview with Newsweek. “We could have minimized that aspect, but you shouldn’t, because the whole point of His suffering is to show what God would do for us.” As Holy Week approaches, and the film hits theaters, there’s never been a better time to explore the life and nature of Christ and examine the future of the faith that has grown in his name. Newsweek’s Special Issue on Jesus is 100 pages of exclusive interviews, photographs and archival documents that reveal the truths inside the truth of the Gospel. By exploring the foundation of Jesus’ own faith and examining the culture he was born into, historians and biblical scholars have created a new, intimate portrait of the man so many believe was also God made flesh. Featuring interviews with faith leaders such as Joel Osteen and historians such as Reza Aslan, as well as a 20 page indepth look at Son of God and a conversation with its creators, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey (“Mark and I will be long gone but this film will still be seen and will bring people the word of God,” says Downey, in an incredibly personal interview), it’s an issue in which people of all faiths will take interest.
