February 15, 2008 On this day in Horror History, George Romero’s Diary of the Dead made its American theatrical debut. Perhaps the lowest budgeted and raw of the quintessential franchise, it follows the zombie apocalypse in a way that follows suit with Romero’s societal undertones in the vein of modern technology and social networking’s presence in the outbreak. Lead by the directorial genius the film would prove to be the most unique of his catalogue, and would be critically acclaimed by the very community that his career is founded on. One thing is for sure, with such cameos as Stephen King, Simon Pegg, Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro, and Wes Craven as various newsreaders and assorted voice over work, the seemingly shadowed blip in the zombie genre’s history will always be a special part of the legacy we have all grown to love. “Jason always wanted to be a documentary filmmaker. But for his senior class project, he decided to try to make a horror film. Thats what he was shooting on that first night, the night when... everything changed.”- Debra Horror Central
