February 2 Perpetual Surrender And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. Romans 6:13, NKJV Devotion is not the trivial expression our modern society has endeavored to make it. God takes devotion very seriously. In God’s language, a devoted thing is that which is set apart to the Lord—not to be taken back at will. As Phillip Doddridge explains, it is easy to see that once our lives are devoted to God, they are no longer ours, and our claim on them must be relinquished. We are no longer our own; we have been bought with a price. All you are—all you have and all you can do, your time, your possessions, your influence over others—will be devoted to Him, that in the future it may be employed entirely for Him and to His glory. You will desire to keep back nothing from Him; but will realize that you are most entirely His. Resign also all that you have to the disposal of His wise and gracious providence. Not only realizing His power, but consenting to His undoubted right to do what He pleases with you, and all that He has given you; and declaring a hearty approval of all that He has done, and all that He may do. Further, let me remind you that this surrender must be perpetual. You must give yourself up to God in such a manner as never more to pretend to be your own. Remember, to be devoted is to be set apart to the Lord. Because the flesh wars against the Spirit, this must be a perpetual act of surrender, a frequent offering, which will become a delightful discipline. Genesis 34; Mark 5; Job 1; Romans 5
