February Meeting Notice - Southern Florida Chapter Explorers Club Date: SUNDAY, February 9, 2014 Venue: IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum, 300 Gulf Stream Way, Dania Beach, FL 33004 Time: 12 noon Speaker: Tanya Streeter Title: Into the Deep - Redefining Limits with Tanya Streeter Join us at noon on Sunday, February 9, 2014 for lunch at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame followed by an extraordinary presentation by world record holder Tanya Streeter on blue water free-diving. Born and raised in the Cayman Islands, and sent to England for boarding school at just 9 years old, Tanya Streeter is an independent soul with a passion for adventure. At a time when the sport was male-dominated and primarily practiced in Europe, Tanya Streeter began free-diving in 1998. Since then, she has broken 10 World Records, one of which stood for over a decade. She remains almost as mystified as anyone about her talent for diving so deep. She battled her demons in the darkness many atmospheres underwater and battles them still trying to reconcile the deaths and injuries sustained by others who have attempted to surpass her 2002 No Limits World Record to 525 feet. Tanya was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame in March 2000 and was honored at The Womens Sports Foundations Annual awards ceremony in New York as one of the worlds top 80 female athletes for 2003. Also in 2003, Tanya joined company with members of the British Royal Family and Mother Theresa in being among the only living people featured on a British postal stamp (Turks & Caicos Islands), a story that was covered extensively by British media for having upset the Queen. The success of her free-diving career, combined with a media friendly appearance and astute management by her husband Paul, has afforded Tanya much publicity. She has appeared on many primetime shows, charming hosts like David Letterman, Conan OBrian, and Ellen DeGeneres. She has also appeared on 60 Minutes. Towards the end of her free-diving career, Tanya began her television career with a well-received series for the BBC which showed her free-diving all around the world, showcasing her knack for extraordinary interaction with marine creatures. She was nominated for a Best Presenter award at the International Film Festival with Sir David Attenborough. Clearly, her underwater antics with marine iguanas, sea lions, and penguins in Galapagos won over the voters. Tanya says her free-diving has always been about self-exploration, but her passion for travel has also led her to explore deep under the Antarctic ice as part of a team put together by the Smithsonian Institutes U.S. Antarctic Program and to the Botswana bush to survive completely Alone In The Wild for a TV series by the same name (Discovery Europe TV). Free-diving is the oldest extreme sport in the world, but perhaps the least understood. Join us as Tanya brings us into her world of free-diving and introduce us to her life since her retirement from the sport in 2006. With a 5 year old daughter, her latest focus is on making good on her accomplishments while fulfilling a promise she made to the sea as she put herself at its mercy. She pledged to protect her beloved ocean, just as it protected her. Her work with The Plastic Oceans Foundation (including an upcoming film) is helping her do just that. In addition to serving as international patron for The Plastic Oceans Foundation and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), she has served as a spokesperson for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, the Coral Reef Alliance, Bite-Back (shark protection), and the Scuba Trust (disabled diver charity). Being a mother is Tanyas latest passion and she feels that every challenge she has faced underwater and above has been preparing her for this role as a parent. She remains passionate about protecting the aquatic environment so that future generations can enjoy it. Meet at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum at 12 noon. Lunch served at 1 PM with Tanyas talk afterwards. Lunch is a choice of Chicken Française or Salmon. After the event, tour the Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum.
