The game was part of a special fundraiser. .. On its surface, Sunday’s softball game had all the ingredients of a rivalry classic, as employees of FedEx battled folks from UPS in a seven-inning showdown in Prestonsburg. “You know everyone thinks that UPS and FedEx are rivals. As a courier, when you walk into the store, and a UPS guy comes in at the same time, everyone has a comment,” says Michael Scott, with Team FedEx. “Its going to be bragging rights until next year, and you know I told my employees I wanted their ‘A-Game,’” says Greg Mills of Team UPS. But like most first impressions, appearances here could be misleading. Both sides are playing to raise money for Carolynn Dalton, who has been battling Multiple Sclerosis. “At Christmas time, I couldnt get to the Christmas party, and they didnt want that to happen again, and so they came together and started raising money to get a van,” Carolynn said. Organizers say efforts leading up to the game helped to raise more than $3,000, which will go towards the handicap accessible van, allowing Carolynn to do more than just attend outings, but go to her doctors appointments as well. “It makes me feel like I have an extended family outside of my regular family,” says Anthony Dalton, Carolynn’s husband and FedEx employee for nearly 17 years. “I’m so grateful that each and every one of them have come forward and helped,” Carolynn said. If you’re curious, UPS beat FedEx by a score of 26 to 7, but folks say the focus Sunday was never on the numbers; it was always about Anthony and Carolynn, who they say inspire unity no matter what uniform they wear. .. Players on both teams say they would like to make the game an annual event. Organizers say the game is not officially endorsed by either FedEx or UPS.
