* Fee-Hike Protests :: Justified or Misguided? * The Sikkim Govt. Colleges decision to hike course fees -- ranging from an increase of only Rs. 879 to Rs. 1,369 -- met with strong protests by students today. The protest took an ugly turn this evening with students resorting to stone-pelting after police tried to restore order. The students had jammed the highway leading up to Gangtok causing huge traffic jams, ultimately causing huge nuisance to the general public. When police tried to clear the highways, agitated students resorted to throwing stones and bricks at the Police. Questions are now being raised whether this protest was even justified, and whether the students have been misled into confrontation with HRDD in what could be a politically motivated move. After all, this is the first time in 30 years that the Govt. College has raised its fees! The students have their right to protest, but not the license to choke the entire traffic of Gangtok! Did they take due permission to take out a procession? If they resort to violence, it is natural that law enforcement agencies will react to bring the situation under control. While the hike may not be rolled back, todays events should definitely teach the students a lesson of not taking the law into their own hands.
