Feeding your senior dog 2 At what age does my dog become - TopicsExpress

Feeding your senior dog 2 At what age does my dog become a senior dog? As a general rule of thumb, we tend to consider dogs over the age of 7 as senior. However, this can be affected by the size and breed of your dog. For example a small breed dog such as a Bichon Frise might not be considered a senior until they are perhaps 10 or 12 whereas a much larger breed such as a Bullmastiff might be a senior citizen at 5 or 6. Do I really need to change my dog’s food as he or she gets older? As our dogs become older, their health and their stamina can start to decline. This means that their bodies lose the ability to repair themselves, maintain normal body functions and adapt to the stresses and changes in the environment. It can also mean that their metabolism slows down so that they need fewer calories to maintain their weight. The right senior food can help your dog to live a happier and healthier life by giving extra support to the heart and kidneys and giving extra beneficial vitamins. However, choosing the right senior food for your dog is vital and is something your veterinary surgeon can give you advice on. If your dog has a specific health issue, then a standard senior food could make them poorly and they may require a diet that specifically caters to that issue. Again, the team at your local Vets4Pets will be happy to talk this through with you and make a recommendation. As always when changing onto a new food, it’s best to start by either mixing the new formula with what they are used to, or offering it at the same time as the old diet, slowly building up the proportion over a week to ten days until you are only feeding the new food. For peace of mind for you and your pet, why not book a £25 senior pet health check with a Vets4Pets vet today? And if we do recommend any treatment as a result of the health check well put the £25 you’ve already paid towards the cost of it. Not only that, but the health check also includes 50% off a bag of senior dog food!
