Feel free to copy what I sent: Please keep the Navy out of the recently expanded Pacific Remote Islands National Monument. The preserve is currently offlimits to commercial fishing and energy exploration. “But unless the Obama administration explicitly bans navy sonar exercises, this marine national park will not be a sanctuary...it will be a training ground.” There is an epic battle waged by scientists and environmental lawyers against the practice of disorienting, stranding and killing whales through high frequency sound waves. The blood-stained legacy of Navy sonar on whales and dolphins MUST end. This is NOT my government representing me...or anyone else I know. In 2008, during joint sonar exercises between the Royal Navy and U.S. Navy in Cornwall, UK, at least 60 dolphins stranded. Months later, more than 100 whales beached themselves in Madagascar and 75 died after ExxonMobil deployed sonar for oil and gas exploration. And in 2011, about a dozen beaked whales were driven ashore on the island of Corfu, Greece, in close proximity to an Italian military exercise. The slaughter did not stop the Navy from seeking permits to enlarge its sonar training zones along the East and West coasts in 2012, even though it had determined that the expansion would expose millions of marine mammals to sonar, killing nearly a thousand animals and seriously wounding 13,000 more. The Navy received permission last December, prompting lawsuits from NRDC and Earthjustice. And still, the killing continues. Just last April, five beaked whales beached themselves and died on Crete during U.S., Israeli and Greek exercises.
