Feel free to disagree, but well into my second year as a Teach For - TopicsExpress

Feel free to disagree, but well into my second year as a Teach For America corp member in Chicago, Ive come to realize a few things. By fast tracking scores of teachers into the work force, weve created an incentive for networks and administrators to burn teachers out, and pay minimal attention to retaining staff. Many of our reform minded schools also have incredibly high amounts of staff turnover, due in part to the long line of brand new teachers with minimal experience who literally have no choice as to where they work. Honestly, from my personal experience, it takes several months for a first year teacher to be even basically effective in the classroom. With a new a round of first year teachers coming in every year, low income schools are left with significant knowledge and experience deficits, which may translate into years of lost instruction for kids in these schools. I am not extricating myself from this equation, nor do I think Ive figured it all out. These are just my current, and continually developing thoughts. Thoughts?
