Feel like Im a lot more than a day late and a dollar short, but my three free months of HBO are beginning to catch me up on some aspects of popular culture. Last night I finally got to ``Treme, HBOs series about post-Katrina New Orleans. Id heard people rave about it, but was unprepared for how powerfully it evokes that city I still love so much. I really think they got so much of NOLAs culture right on. I could almost smell the red beans. And the music. Oh the music. With real New Orleans musicians playing real New Orleans musicians and performing real New Orleans music. Here it is so many years after I left the Crescent City, yet all it takes is a couple of bars of music and Im back there again. I hate it when people go to New Orleans and come back to tell me all about their adventures when they havent ventured outside the French Quarter. The minute ``Treme crossed the GNO Bridge to the West Bank, I knew the makes of this series managed to burst that French-Quarter-only bubble and get real. I suspect that much as I will want to binge-watch ``Treme, I really will be able to take it only in small doses. Its just too heart-tearing to consume in one big gulp. In the couple of episodes I watched, I could see my New Orleans friends painful post-Katrina struggles played out again. hbo/treme#/
