Feels like doing a touch of personal reflection over the past 4 or so years of my burlesque scene... Warning: I have not proof read this much, and if I was to, I would need to write my own essay/blog... I remember attending my first burlesque lesson at the then daggy Tasmanias Pole Dancing and Burlesque Academy, and was quite nervous as I did not know what I was expecting. At that time, I had only ever heard of Dita von Tease, and wasnt sure exactly what she did. I had never seen a burlesque show, as burlesque was still a new thing for Hobart. But as always, Grace Cherry had made me feel welcome and every student that passed through those doors. I remember the warm up we did- shimmy and shake at the same time, and a yell, to not feel so funny. I remember the song we danced to- Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand. I soon became hooked on the Wednesday night outing, involving lots of laughs and a method to take your mind off the hustle and bustle of the outside world, and to do something different once in a while. I also developed a greater range of social network, and I feel safe to say that the friendship I had developed through burlesque would be my own personal friends. The student dance group was at Les Girls in 2010, involving Ana Tique, Valerie Noir and Velvet Sway- and boy that was so much fun. I think I was hooked on the feeling of dancing and moving and being cheered by the audience. The first solo was in December that year, and my solo was Man I Feel Like a Woman, and that was so nerve racking- but it was still so much fun. My movements were so stiff, and I did not move much- and I think back, it still feels like Im doing Line Dancing to that song. Fast forward a few years, and burlesque classes were starting to become well known and the classes were increasing in numbers. Burlesque shows were becoming a social outing for people of Hobart- from a show where not many people appeared, to having rooms full of spectators. Not only have I improved myself as a performer, but the whole atmosphere of burlesque in Hobart has improved. I really am glad to have been a part of burlesque over the past years, and even though I was not one of the original burlesque performers in Hobart, I feel honored and blessed to have been involved in their legacy, and cant wait to see how the future will unfold :)
