Fellow alumni of Alcatraz were the likes of Scarface Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, and Alvin Karpus. The guards were as tough and hardened as most of the prisoners. Any infraction of the many rigid rules could mean a week or two in THE HOLE. Picture being locked in a roughly 4 x 7 steel box in a wet cold basement of the prison, pitch blackness, some straw on the floor, stripped to the underwear where the temperature could get down to the 40s, mostly bread and water, reportedly occasionally accompanied by severe beatings by guards. As tough a man as Al Capone came out of Alcatraz in a state of insanity. But Whitey survived it. He came out a different man. His penchant for violence was now focused and disciplined, allowing him to maximize his talent for productive (for him) criminal activity. The result was that he was never arrested again until his entire house of cards came tumbling down in the mid nineties with his ultimate indictment. And at that, he was never caught and imprisoned for another 16 years on the run. Stay tuned for the next chapter..... ;
