Fellow comic book nerds, I have a question. In your experience, what/who are the most visible examples of mental illness in comics? The ones Ive come up with are all pretty well negative...The Joker (antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, schizotypal disorder...serial killer, terrorist) Hank Pym/Ant Man/Giant Man/Yellowjacket/Wasp (bipolar disorder...spousal abuser, builder of genocidal robots) Harley Quinn (dissociative disorder, character pretty much created to show all the fun involved in abusive relationships...on a kids show.) and, if were getting a little more obscure, Demolition Man/D-Man (schizophrenic, homeless, thinks hes an Avenger, pretty much a joke) and David Haller/Legion (Multiple personality disorder, once rewrote history by committing patricide) Am I missing anyone? Any POSITIVE examples? Because I cant call a single one to mind. Unsurprisingly, this bothers me. Comics tend to handle physical disabilities in a very positive light...Daredevil, Echo/Maya Lopez, Charles Xavier...Mental illness? Mental disabilities? The message seems to be that theyre all creepy and scary. Guido Martin? Jamie Wyman Reddy? Sean Reddy? Zach Reddy? Feel free to tag in anybody you can think of. Id like to discuss this. I have some ideas brewing.
