Fellow students, Today is a very important day. I’m looking forward to seeing you all at our HSF Annual General Meeting happening later today at 11am in our North Student Centre. You are the only ones with enough power to make a decision that will ultimately set our future compass. We are all in this together as a community – HSF, Humber & Guelph-Humber. Whether or not a candidate is considered disqualified – it’s their democratic right to receive an appeal. The HSF Elections & Appeals Policy (humberlife/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Elections-Appeals.pdf) clearly states: “At any time during the election, a candidate who wishes to address a decision, or action, taken by the CRO must make an appointment with the CRO and the Executive Director. At this meeting, reasonable steps will be taken to resolve the issue, or the candidate may begin the appeals process (see the Appeals section of this policy)” (P1). Our Board Committees Policy (humberlife/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Board-Committees.pdf) clearly identifies what purpose the Elections and Judicial Review Committee serves: “The purpose of the Elections and Judicial Review Committee is to hear ALL DISPUTES from a decision of the Chief Returning Officer and to make a ruling, in accordance with the Elections and Judicial Review Policy which is binding upon all parties” (P2). I believe the ideal solution for everyone in this situation is to oppose the ratification of President to hold an appeal in accordance with our Elections & Appeals Policy before the Elections and Judicial Review Committee and conclude based on that final binding decision. This would avoid a new election for the position of President (the other positions are completely unaffected) allowing us to move forward in confidence. We can achieve great things when we stand united and put our minds together. Finally, I sincerely thank you all for the continued support and appreciate everyone’s perspectives and views. We have already set change in motion and we have already grown stronger. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” – M. Williamson Sincerely, Timothy Brilhante HSF President
