Fergus schooling yesterday... We were working on 10m circles - TopicsExpress

Fergus schooling yesterday... We were working on 10m circles in canter: pushing the canter forwards, using the circles to bring them back, taking the circles away from the fence and using them for straightness like we did with Rui last weekend. I was also working on getting him reaching down into the contact, then bringing him back up, varying his positioning in trot and canter, as recommended by S. We threw in a few canter centre lines and direct transitions to halt which were... Interesting. Apparently if I overcook these, F does a reasonable impression of a western reining horse! Oops. I stupidly pushed him for a few changes at one point and had one or two that were ok (not right, but progress) before I fried his brain, and he went up. I need someone in the school to shout at me Rome wasnt built in a day and remember where you were 6 months ago? to stop me getting carried away. Tact fail. Sorry Fergus... In trot, were back to basics - Im working on keeping my shoulders back and my head up. This gives me loads of scope to control the power - rising higher, sitting up, his medium is getting much less hard work and more fun. Ive included a pic of a previous schooling session from earlier this month - look at the difference in my shoulders - eek... Hes a bit poll low in some of the pics - he was finding it hard work, and its a new way of working so will take some time for him to be able to pick up a bit under me. I also spent a bit of time collecting him and getting him bouncing under me, from my seat. Its a work in progress, but hes really trying for me, which is great :) Im really pleased with the progress hes making, but I need an absolute kick up the backside to remind me not to push for everything at once! *slaps face with metaphorical wet fish*
