Ferguson is pretty much just a test run for an upcoming America where we can all be disenfranchised at will. One of my signature memories of Houston before I left was being in my old hood in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike in a broiling hot blackout and and under curfew, listening to the curfew being announced from an HPD armored personnel carrier. There is a big damned difference between being in a riot-torn St. Louis suburb and being in an inner-city Houston neighborhood after a natural disaster, except for one thing-- in both cases, the local PD decided it would be a great opportunity to trot out their paramilitary toys and make sure everyone knew who was in charge. A lot of Americans will look at the events in Ferguson and decide that, on the basis of class and race, it cant happen here. Well, they are wrong-- and if we dont start walking back this 9/11 changed everything bullcrap, and start walking it back *right now*... we deserve what we will get.
