Ferley Repeats at Reno Rodeo By Susan Kanode for the Reno Rodeo RENO, NEV., June 29, 2013 -- Eight individual event champions were crowned at the 94th annual Reno Rodeo Saturday night and only one of them was a repeat. Chad Ferley, from Oelrichs, S.D., won the saddle bronc riding here for the second time. The first time was in 2006 when he earned the world championship. The six-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier helped his bid for a seventh by earning a $9,837 for his three rides that added up to 254 points. Ferley came into the final round in second place behind Jake Wright, from Milford, Utah. He easily made up the point deficit with a 90-point score on a horse that he had wanted to ride here for a long time. When he found out that he was getting on Flying Five Rodeo’s Spring Planting, he couldn’t have been any happier. He had been on the horse one time before in Molalla, Ore., and also scored 90 points there. “I’ve only been to 18 rodeos so far this year,” Ferley said. “I’m picking and choosing where I want to go and having fun. Reno has always been fun and this year it couldn’t have been much better. That horse is outstanding. He was fun when I got on him in Molalla and fun again here. ” Ferley was ranked 21st in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings prior to the Reno rodeo with $15,926 in season earnings. With the money he won here, he should be close to the top 10. Wes Stevenson was able to hold onto his lead and win the bareback riding title collecting his first set of Reno Rodeo Championship Spurs and $14,260. Stevenson, from Lubbock, Texas, was the big money winner at this year’s rodeo. Sherry Cervi, from Marana, Ariz., is a veteran competitor with three world titles to her credit. She has won titles at rodeos across the country, but this year, she got her first pair of spurs. She had a total time of 51.58 seconds to win $9,431. All of the other winners earned their first titles here. Hunter Cure from Holliday, Texas, won the steer wrestling with a time of 13.0 and won $11,332. In the team roping it was Keven Daniel from Franklin, Tenn., and Chase Tryan, from Helena, Mont., that earned the title. They had a total time of 15.9 seconds on three runs and earned $10,468 each. Clint Cooper, from Decatur won the tie-down roping with a total time of 24.3 seconds. He increased his total earnings by $11,440. Rookie Brennon Eldred, from Purcell, Okla., was one of two men to have successful rides in the final round. Eldred rode Western Rodeo’s Big Jake in the final round for 86 points to earn the title with 166 points on two rides. He won $7,583. The all-around championship went to Trevor Brazile as the high money winner who competed in two events, tie-down and team roping.
