Ferry Plaza Seafood 274-2561 653 Union Btw. Powell and Columbus Since I’ve lived in North Beach there was a sushi restaurant, Suzy Kate’s Southern Home Cooking, Pasta Pomodoro, and most recently that ill-fated Indian restaurant in this location. I liked them all, but not one of them lasted. I think Ferry Plaza Food is here to stay. Pretty optimistic considering that I was their first customer. But everyone who walked by was excited to discover that Ferry Plaza (should it be called Washington Square?) Seafood is open. Tourists will surely like it and we locals are always happy for a pizza-free place. Everything about Ferry Plaza is simple. Clean décor, a basic menu of crab or shrimp salads, Louis, cocktails and sandwiches, crab cakes, mussels, a seafood pasta, chowder, daily specials, and of course oysters and a large selection of wines. I liked Ferry Plaza at Ferry Plaza and I like it even better in North Beach. It was lovely to sit outside looking toward the Square and it’ll be even nicer when the roadwork is complete. We had mussels with lager and coconut milk, tender and tasty with the excellent French fries and Acme bread. The “Tower” of perfectly ripe avocado, tangy pink grapefruit, and crab in light vinaigrette was the perfect lunch. A bittersweet chocolate pot de crème was the ideal rich dessert to batten down the light entrée. The service was extremely friendly. Although I think Ferry Plaza will become a local favorite, just in case there is a restaurant curse on the property, you had better check it out right away.
