Festival Lineup This year the Blues and Arts Festival is bringing yet another a fantastic lineup – come on down and listen to the sweet sounds of these talented musicians: Javier Batiz DSC_4982“Javier Batiz”, hails from Tijuana, B.C.Mexico (He still lives in the house where he was born). Javier doesn’t play stereotypical latin music, instead he is known as the “Godfather of Mexican Rock” by those who follow his career, and other notable musicians who have gone on to successful music careers in the United States. Many got their start in one of Batiz’s bands. In particular, Carlos Santana has given credit to Javier, both in print and on stage, that Batiz is the reason the Grammy Award Winning, guitarist decided to play guitar! Santana heard the Batiz band “Los T.J.’s” in the town plaza in Tijuana in 1959 and ultimately played bass with the band before he moved to the U.S. Javier Batiz, on the other hand, remained in Mexico and evolved his guitar style and writing skills while on a long journey through several popular bands and many famous musicians including “Fito de le Parra” the drummer with “Canned Heat” Javier Batiz has released almost 40 albums and had several number one hits on the Mexican charts. Javier Batiz is a true ‘Treasure of Mexico” and we thank him for the contribution he has made to the growth of rock and blues worldwide. We are honored to have Javier Batiz perform at the 2014 ‘Blues and Arts Fiesta”. Enjoy! Rod Piazza Rod Piazza It’s a common mistake to think of Rod Piazza as one of the “young turks” or “new generation” of the blues. But at this point in his career, Piazza has been making records longer than his mentor George “Harmonica” Smith did, or Sonny Boy Williamson (either of them!), or Howlin ’ Wolf, or Muddy Waters. He’s been a recording artist for more years than Little Walter was alive. Piazza is a tried-and-true, dyed-in-the-wool blues veteran with credentials that are second to none. From his first recordings as a leader in 1967 fronting The Dirty Blues Band, through his multiple W.C. Handy award winning releases with his current band The Mighty Flyers, to his countless appearances both live and on record with the most revered names in the blues, Piazza has established himself as one of the most influential living blues harp players. He’s consistently surrounded himself with players who bring out the best he has to offer, and epitomize the very best in blues: fresh, swinging, tasteful, exciting and creative. The core of The Mighty Flyers has been together for over two decades, and developed the kind of musical telepathy that simply cannot exist without years of experience on the bandstand and in the studio. The Mighty Flyers are a well-oiled machine, with Piazza in the driver’s seat.
