Festival de Cinema Latino-Americano de São Paulo: os novos talentos do cinema latino-americano segundo a Variety: Claudia Calvino (Cuba), Edher Campos (México), Fernando Coimbra (Brasil), Roberto Flores Helmer (Colômbia), Ramiro Garcia Bogliano (Argentina), Agustina Llambi-Campbell (Argentina), Joel Novoa Helmer-Scribe (Venezuela), German Tejeira (Uruguai), Eduardo Villalobos (Chile) e Arturo Yepez (Equador). ******************************* RISING STARS: LATIN AMERICAN TALENT These up-and-coming producers, directors and writers are changing the regional business (Anna Marie de la Fuente, John Hopewell / Variety) *** Claudia Calvino, Producer, Cuba Despite limited resources in Cuba, Calvino has built up an impressive slate, including local hit “Juan of the Dead” and “Melaza” by her husband, Carlos Lechuga. As a partner in 5th Avenida, Calvino is co-producing Brugues’ bilingual heist pic “The Wrong Place” and Lechuga’s untitled vampire pic, among others. *** Edher Campos, Producer, Mexico Campos came of age professionally at 2009’s Ventana Sur, selling Michael Rowe’s “Leap Year,” which he produced, to Pyramide Intl. It went on to win Cannes’ Camera d’Or. This year, Campos co-produced Diego Quemada-Diaz’s “La jaula de oro,” a Cannes Un Certain Talent winner. His pic “Sweet Baby Jesus” is in post and “Room” is in pre-prod. *** Fernando Coimbra, Writer-Director, Brazil Mundial’s first Brazil pickup was Coimbra’s debut, “ Wolf at the Door.” From Brazil’s go-to production house, Gullane Filmes, “Wolf” melds psychological insight, kidnap thriller drive and one ghastly act of horror. “They don’t make many Latin American films like this,” said producer Bruno Bettati, awarding San Sebastian’s Horizontes Prize to “Wolf.” Now writing “Os esforcados,” which Coimbra calls “ ‘Macbeth’ meets the Coen brothers.” *** Roberto Flores Helmer, Producer-Scribe, Colombia Flores helmed and produced shorts and docs before venturing into fiction through his shingle, Kymera. Flores’ directed dramas “Chasing Fireflies” and “Ruido Rosa,” co-written with national literary prize winner Carlos Franco. Next he is producing dramas “Tan lejos como puedas,” and “El paraiso,” co-penned with Franco. *** Ramiro Garcia Bogliano, Writer-Director-Producer, Argentina A founding father of Argentina’s modern genre scene with younger brother Adrian, Garcia Bogliano never made just simple slashers, writing-directing-producing titles such as revenge thriller “No morire sola” and home-invasion comedy “Penumbra,” launching Costa Rica genre (“Donde duerme el horror”) and shooting in Cuba (“Policlinico miserable”). *** Agustina Llambi-Campbell, Producer, Argentina Shingle La Union de los Rios, founded by producer Llambi-Campbell and scribe-helmers Santiago Mitre, Alejandro Fadel and Martin Mauregui, is shooting “The Eye of the Centaur,” Hugo Santiago’s comeback. Llambi-Campbell has Mitre’s next pic in pre-production, while shepherding Fadel’s second film and Mauregui’s debut, “1922,” through development. *** Joel Novoa Helmer-Scribe, Venezuela FI grad Novoa’s film education began at age 6 when he took photos on the set of his father, Jose Novoa’s, hitman thriller “Sicario.” At 24, he debuted with “God’s Slave,” set against real events of suicide bombings in Argentina. He is now helming “ID2,” the sequel to Philip Davis’ 1995 undercover-cop drama, “I.D.” Sally Hibbin is producing. *** German Tejeira, Writer-Director-Producer, Uruguay Co-scribe/producer on 2D toon “Anina,” and director of buzzworthy “Una noche sin luna,” Tejeira forms part of a go-ahead talent cluster including Rain Dogs Cine partner Julian Goyoaga and “Anina” helmer Alfredo Soderguit. Next up: TV projects, and producing Goyoaga’s directorial debut. *** Eduardo Villalobos, Producer, Chile Villalobos produced helmer Alejandro Fernandez Almendras’ most mainstream pic to date with revenge thriller “To Kill a Man,” a Film Factory sales pickup at San Sebastian. He also exec produced Almendras’ earlier pics, such as family saga “Huacho,” and is developing his next: “Hierro” and “La indomita luz.” *** Arturo Yepez, Producer, Ecuador Yepez first produced “No Autumn, No Spring,” an Outsider Pictures world sales pickup after serving as first AD on some of Ecuador’s most successful pics. Yepez’s shingle Carnaval Cine, formed with helmer Sebastian Cordero and thesp-scribe Andres Crespo, is producing Ecuador’s first 3D toon, “The Smoking Mirror,” and will distribute Cordero’s “Europa Report.”
