Few Americans are aware that the U.S. military is involved in air strikes over Syria and that as a result, dozens of civilians (at this writing) are reported to have been killed. War, in multiple theaters and on multiple fronts, has become so much a part of the background noise of daily life that we have ceased even to think of it as war. Indeed, no matter how many nation-states or peoples the American government tries to bomb into submission, it never uses this word. And the news media scarcely regards it as newsworthy anymore. Another day, another American military incursion. And this is all by design and deliberate strategy. We are supposed to grow numb to war. We are supposed to resign ourselves to it as the normal baseline to life. We are supposed to give no thought to it anymore. And in this way, as we continue voting for people who call themselves liberal or progressive, we will never look upon it a contradiction that they authorize and fund the needless deaths of countless people throughout the world, something a genuine progressive of the past would never do.
