Few feelings are more difficult to bear than an abiding - TopicsExpress

Few feelings are more difficult to bear than an abiding loneliness. But what is loneliness exactly? One can be alone and not in the least feel lonely. In fact, solitude can often be a nurturing experience. Each of us needs (perhaps in different measures) to linger in the sweetness of our own company. Sometimes its the only way to filter out the madness of the world and to hear our own inner voice. By the same token, one can be among people and still feel lonely. We all can feel an acute sense of isolation to be in the company of others who misunderstand us or who are not of kindred mind. Can we feel loneliness even when we are in the company of a friend, comrade, or loved one? Yes, of course. At times, its possible. And its no commentary on our relationships that we may feel this way. Rather, its only a reflection of our missing (or longing for) a certain kind of connection we may once have had and would like to experience again.
