Few of the thousands of people who pass daily through the intersection of King & Pitt Streets, Sydney, would notice the splendid sandstone facades of the three storey corner building constructed in 1878 as headquarters of the Australian Mutual Fire Insurance Society. The cantilevered awning, a twentieth Century device bolted & riveted unsympathetically to so many Nineteenth Century commercial buildings, has effectively concealed a very significant part of the States architectural heritage.
