Few things are more depressing to this atheist than the sight of otherwise sensible people bending over backwards to see Pope Francis as a progressive. Yes, “Evangelii Gaudium” critiques the ravages of capitalism but it also says that ordaining women to the priesthood “is not a question open to discussion.” This should go without saying, but if youre looking to the Catholic church, or any church for that matter, for a radical vision then youre looking in the wrong place, unless youre prepared to be highly selective in what you choose not to see.
