Few words about the month of MUHARRAM (which began couple of days - TopicsExpress

Few words about the month of MUHARRAM (which began couple of days back), which might be useful both for Muslims and Non-Muslims alike. 1. This is the 1st month of Islamic Calendar. 2. Its one of the four sanctified months 3. One should fast as much as one can in this blessed month. Muhammad (SAW) said the best fasts after the fasts of Ramadhan are those of the month of Muharram. 4. The fast of Ashura or the 10th day of Muharram carries a great reward. Please note some misconceptions or wrong practices by some Muslims. Its very important to mention these because its not the right representation of Islam as understood by many. Many so called Muslims attribute the sanctity of Ashura to the martyrdom of Hazrat Hussain (May Allah be pleased with him). Whereas the truth is that its sanctity was established during the days of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW), muchg earlier than the birth of Hazrat Hussain (May Allah be pleased with him). Many people consider it as a month of mourning and do not hold any marriage ceremonies, etc. This is a baseless concept and is against the teachings of the holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW). IF THE DEATH OF ANY EMINENT PERSON ON A PARTICULAR DAY RENDERS THAT DAY UNLUCK FOR ALL TIMES TO COME, THEN ONE CAN HARDLY FIND A DAY OUT OF 365 DAYS WHEN AN EMINENT PERSON IN HISTORY HAS NOT PASSED AWAY. The holy Prophet has made us free from all such superstitious beliefs and they should deserve no attention. Another wrong practice related to this month is to hold lamentation and mourning ceremonies in the memory of martyrdom of Sayyidina Hussain (May Allah be pleased with him). The people of Jahiliyyah (Ignorance) used to mourn over their deceased friends or relatives through loud lamentations, by tearing their clothes and by beating their chests and cheeks. The holy Prophet (SAW) stopped Muslims from doing all this and directed them to observe patience by saying “Verily we belong to Allah and to Him is our return”. Muhammad (SAW) said, “He is not from our group who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and cries in the manner of the people of jahiliyyah (ignorance)”. Even Sayyidina Hussaian (May Allah be pleased with him), shortly before his demise, had advised his beloved sister Sayyidah Zainab (May Allah be pleased with him) not to mourn over his death in this manner. Of course, he was a downright Muslim, how he could he have not asked his sister not to mourn in the manner of people of jahiliyyah.
