Fiery Darts Greek: belos (NT:956), dart, or any missile thrown, as the javelin, spear, arrow, or stone from a sling. The fiery darts perhaps refer to the combustible arrowheads that set fire to the fortifications, ships, houses, and even the shields of the enemy made of wood and leather. To quench these fiery darts shields were covered with metal. As applied to Christian warfare they refer to evil thoughts, lusts, passions, and temptations of various kinds (1 Cor. 10:13-14; 2 Cor. 10:4-6; James 1:13-15; Romans 6:12; 1 John 2:15-17). This no doubt refers to Satan who is captain of all other wicked ones (Matthew 13:19,38; 1 John 2:13-14; 1 John 3:12; 1 John 5:18). The term is also used of other wicked persons (Isaiah 11:4; 2 Thes. 2:8; 2 Peter 2:7; 2 Peter 3:17). Dake Topical Index.
