Fifteen years ago today my husband and best friend passed away of a rare, nasty, insidious cancer called angiosarcoma which is cancer of the cells lining the walls of blood vessels. He sickened and died within four months and by the end we were both ready for the pain to be over. He lived through three major surgeries, a lung biopsy, enumerable tests, chemotherapy, and radiation. He was on home oxygen, lost his hair, lost the ability to balance his body, lost his sight, and eventually did not know me. He was tough, he was brave and he faced that horrible battle like a hero. God broke my family the day he took Michael away but I will always be grateful that for eighteen years I had a loving, hardworking man who was a good father and a wonderful husband. I don’t usually make much note of the day of Michael’s death but 15 years of living and coping without his companionship, wisdom and love deserves a little notice. I’m not as well off as I would have been if he had lived and I’m definitely much, much more alone but I like to think he would have been proud of our little family. My heart goes out to anyone dealing with the horrors of cancer.
