Fifteen years ago today, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was standing solely on steel as the last of the original granite plinth stones was removed the day before and the process of placing the lighthouse on the jacking platform has begun. May 1999 was the month of moving preparation as the final bit of the original foundation was removed, the new concrete foundation was poured, and the jacking platform and controls were installed under and around the base of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
