Fifteen years to the day, the movie Fight Club was released and within a week, my friend Waylon and I went to see it. We thought we were going to see a film about dudes fighting in basements wearing cool clothes from thrift stores, but what we got was something completely different - something so much more. As an 18 year-old, the film introduced me to ideas of radicalism, anti-consumerism and pretty much complete opposition to the dominant culture. However, it didnt necessarily leave a pleasant alternative. In commemoration of its release, lets all reflect on our role as consumers in society. What does it mean to us, our families and community at large to be dependent on an economic system which requires us to spend, buy and consume? Indeed, by dint of this consumerism our economic system thrives. How can we find balance - psychologically, environmentally, economically and morally - in such a system?
