Fifteenth ‘Sub Family’ Home Here Todays Honolulu newspaper announced another nuclear sub is on its way to make Pearl Harbor its home port. Jefferson City, another 150-man crew of a nuclear submarine will join 14 others whose crews’ families make Hawaii home. Men experience a six-month deployment before rejoining loved ones here. I view it as part of Hawaiis modern folklore, had the chance to bend my 64 frame inside USS Hawaii when it first arrived, about five years ago. Our world of defense has changed mightily, some of the most vital are under the sea. Part of the Navy’s first line of defense, operating out of here, our 15 nuclear submarines primary task being “intelligence: Underwater for months tracking, stealthily offshore guarding against attacking. Won’t surface, never seen, resolute and always there. Limitless power makes water and air. Life is compressed within each submarine, an integrated fighting machine. Missiles, torpedoes to strike with precision, well supplied with lots of ammunition. Anti-submarine, mine warfare resort, Special Forces delivery and support. Crew members are above average; engineering training helps each excel. (Optimism and gentlemanly grace works best for living with limited space. Six hours of work, four hours of sleep. (Crowded six bunks could fit in a house’s closet.) Line up for meals, have five minutes to eat. Don’t delay: Someone’s waiting for your seat! Wives and children wait at home in Hawaii. Add new words to The Navy Hymn for them: “Lord God, our power evermore, whose arm doth reach the ocean floor, dive with our men beneath the sea; Traverse its depths protectively. Oh hear us when we pray and keep them safe from peril in the deep.”
