Fifty four (54) at 4:30 a.m. Some people go on African safari like the King of Spain who sneaked off to Botswana while his country had 25% unemployment, but for my taste I pick rhubarb at night. Its exciting. First of all, its dark. Thats always exciting and if its a dark and stormy night, its even more exciting. Second, finding the rhubarb plants in the dark is, believe you me, a great challenge. Sometimes you dont know if youve grabbed a big rhubarb leaf or youre stroking an elephants ear. Finally, after pulling the selected stalks by feel, theres cutting the leaves off using a knife in the dark. No no no, gutting and skinning a rhubarb plant in the middle of the night is not childs play. And for what? Oh, strawberry rhubarb pie.
