Fifty-four years ago today, Hollywood lost 24-year-old actor James Byron Dean in a tragic accident. The young man grew up on a farm in Indiana with his aunt and uncle. He came to Hollywood in 1951 and amassed multiple television credits before he made his first film, East of Eden (1955). After only two more movies, Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Giant (1956), his life ended prematurely on a California highway when an oncoming car crossed the center line and hit Deans Porsche head-on. An investigation into the accident revealed that Dean was driving at 85 mph and the other driver was not cited for any wrongdoing. Dean was later buried at Fairmount, Indiana. His untimely death, good looks and brief career gave him an icon status in the film industry and he remains one of filmdoms most recognized faces.
