Fifty years ago, the U.S. Surgeon General released the first - TopicsExpress

Fifty years ago, the U.S. Surgeon General released the first report on smoking and health. Since then, there have been an estimated 20 million deaths in the United States due to smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke—more than the population of the state of New York. To illustrate the human toll of smoking, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) will be launching an online memorial using the hashtag #20Million. This memorial honors those people—spouses, mothers, fathers, children, sisters, brothers, friends—who have lost their lives due to a smoking-related illness. We Hope You Can Participate Beginning October 7, OSH invites you to share a memorial—a message and/or a photo—of someone you know who has lost their life to a smoking-related disease. By posting your memorial on social media with the hashtag #20Million, your submission will become a part of CDC’s #20Million Memorial. cdc.gov/tips
